22 Nanban Rengo runners attended Mike Trees’ running clinic in Yoyogi Park. Mike is a top-class athlete himself (and coach) and was supported Donny Mackay, an Australian physio. The two key elements of the clinic were how to avoid injury and how to improve running form. Mike shared a program that, done in just 20 minutes, twice a week, helps strengthen and protect runners, while Donny went through a set of stretches that also help avoid the need for remedial treatment. Mike’s section on running form focused on the self-evident fact that to run faster we need to increase our cadence, or stride length, or both. Mike provided a set of exercises (like butt kicks and bounds) that improve running form, cadence, and stride length. When you see a Namban Rengo runner bounding or skipping, it’s a fair bet that they have attended one of Mike’s excellent running clinics.
